The Gibberd Rooms

The house is situated in the Green Belt and Sir Frederick Gibberd, the master planner of Harlow new town, was denied permission to demolish it and replace it with one of his own design. He therefore embarked on a radical transformation of the original building, including the addition of a large full-height living room with picture windows overlooking the garden.

This extension, including Sir Frederick's library and archive, is the basis of the Gibberd Rooms, now open to the public on a timed access, starting on Sundays in the season. Entry passes (£1.00, children free) are available from the shop.

The rooms have been restored as far as possible to their original look in the sixties, and all the furniture and fittings are authentic. Models of some of Sir Frederick's projects are on display, together with much information about his lifetime's work. It is hoped that visitors will be able to recapture some of the feeling of the house as it was in his day.

The library and archives are available for genuine research purposes - please telephone 01279 442112 for further details.
